Vlamingen
in Boston
Flemings in Boston is an organization of Flemish expats who regularly meet in a very casual and social setting. Members come from all walks of life. Students, temporary or full-time expats are welcome to join our casual meetings and events.
As a secondary goal, VIB promotes and brings awareness to the Flanders region of Belgium in the New England area and works to enhance ties between them.

I arrived in the US in 2003 and since then have been actively involved in the local business community. Although born and raised in Turnhout, Belgium, I lived and worked in Spain and the U.K. prior to moving to Beverly, where I currently work as director of operations and lecturer for Endicott College's School of Hospitality Management. As the founder of Vlamingen in Boston and official representative for "Vlamingen in de Wereld", I look forward to meeting many new Flemish expats and show them what Boston has to offer.

I was born and raised in Turnhout and spent my twenties in Ghent, Belgium. When I first came to Cambridge in June 2006, I intended only a short scientific visit, but quickly got intrigued by the many opportunities this area had to offer. Currently, I'm working as a computational biologist at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Although I got used to the ease, convenience, and abundance of everything here, I consider staying in touch with European culture, its folks, and the Flemish people in particular, as a must.

Originally from Diksmuide, I studied and worked in Ghent before moving to Boston in November 2007. As a post-doctoral researcher at Harvard Medical School I started exploring... and loved it!! Opportunities & challenges make living abroad inspirational. Let's share all of that.

After completing my Masters degree at the KUL in Belgium, I came to the US in August 2008 to obtain a PhD in Chemical Engineering at MIT. The entire Boston area is so invigorating and cosmopolitan that moving here undoubtedly made life richer. And the fact that I can share my experiences (and create new ones!) with fellow Flemish people here, makes this -even more so, a place that I can call home.
Founded on January 21, 2008, Vlamingen In Boston started as a simple quest to bring Flemish people together with the help of a facebook page. What began with a small group quickly expanded through word of mouth and the help of the internet.
In the subsequent months several new expats came forward and expressed their interest in helping with the group and, although meetings remained very sporadic and unofficial in its first year, 10 events were planned in 2009 in a variety of locations in the city.
Early 2010, a more official VIB website was created to better serve Flemish expats looking to move or meet with others in the Boston area.
While we value our American lifestyles and experiences, we also wish to maintain a link to our home country. As such, VIB provides a casual and fun way to meet Flemish Expats in Boston by providing a monthly outlet to discuss everything from politics and stories, to simply offering a nodding head when reminiscing over our common background. As conversations always seem to end up talking about food and drinks, we like to meet every 4-5 weeks to keep the 'pintje pakken' tradition going.
